Victorian triple band ring with three strands of black elephant tail hair cased in 9k rolled gold, circa 1880s-1890s.  

Although the African tradition of using fallen elephant tail hairs to create bracelets worn as protection has been around for centuries, the concept became popular in Europe late in the 19th century during safari adventures to India. During the British Raj Western European adventurers started visiting India and would commission elephant hair jewelry as a souvenir of their safari experience.  These mementos of rings and bracelets were adorned to prevent illness and harm, as well as bring love and luck
