Antique Victorian gold filled oval locket with scalloped edge and wavy engine-turned circular design framing an oval cartouche - back has same design with larger cartouche; inside reveals a compartment holding a swirl of brown hair over pink silk, framed by an engine-turned surround and reeded bezel, circa 1860s-1880s.

Victorian hair lockets were worn during the Mourning Era following the death of Prince Albert, and would be used, along with other types of jewelry, to hold the hair of a loved one that had passed. But hair was also given as a token of affection, often within families. This particular piece could have been used either way.
