This pair of substantial antique buttons feature an embossed pictural scene depicting the Incroyables & Merveilleuses, framed by a floral border, studded with cut steel rivets. The Incroyables and the Merveilleuses refer to a French fashion & social subculture in Paris that emerged in response to the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution and symbolized a return to hedonism, extravagance, and pleasure-seeking behavior.
