This unique & rare piece of history comes from the early Victorian era and is done in the Egyptian Revival style; this fun item is a handkerchief holder, or clip, that has a 14k gold ring, size 6.5, connected by a chain to a pair of real iridescent scarab beetles set in 14k gold with legs used to clasp a hanky; there is a rectangular bar that slides up to lock the cloth in place. In Victorian times, when most people did not have running water, they used these to hold a perfume soaked cloth. It could be used to mask their own smell, or held to their nose to cover the smell of others.
