This lovely Victorian era mourning brooch is constructed of a repousse frame border in 14k gold with a glass piece protecting the locket section holding a loved one's braided blonde hair. Mourning jewelry became popular when Queen Victoria was in a mourning period over the death of her husband. Hair jewelry was also used as a token of love for a sweetheart or family members. The back of the piece is 14k gold, but the pin mechanism is not, and the pendant loop that was added later is also not gold. This piece of history weighs 5 grams and measures 24mm wide; it is in good antique condition with some surface wear and dings, and a small file mark to the back top left. There are no markings, but it has been tested and is guaranteed.
